In SCI

DJ Samala isn’t your average disc jockey. Though you’ll find the New York native’s Twitter feed and Facebook posts peppered with ’90s music references and posters for shows in the San Francisco area (where she’s based), her day job is that of a tireless activist as the Executive Director of 18 Million Rising.

This June at Hollyhock, Social Change Institute is lucky enough to welcome Christina Samala (AKA DJ Samala, AKA Samala) as a special guest of the conference (registration is still open for those yet to sign up!). As a conference meant to bring social change leaders together, Samala will have a lot to offer SCI.

It’s no small feat to see the potential in a marginalized part of the American population and see the possibilities in its numbers (at 6% of the population it’s the fastest growing racial group), culture, and community. 18 Million Rising is a network of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) set to rectify the status of Asian Americans as politically under-represented, under-engaged, and under-organized communities.

Leveraging technology and social media and drawing from the talents of the AAPI community as activists, artists, organizations, and digital media influencers, 18 Million Rising and Samala have set out to activate some serious change. Their campaigns include We Need Asian American Heroes, #18MillionHearts (calling for a fair and modern immigration policy), and the victorious Remove These Racist Apps (which successfully advocated for Google’s removal of apps that utilized Asian stereotypes).

It seems Samala, as Executive Director, knows how to make strong, engaging, and often very witty campaigns and we can’t wait for her perspective on how to motivate the masses at June’s SCI.

Haven’t yet signed up for SCI? Fear not! There’s still time to register for SCI at Hollyhock this June 11 – 15. Act quick, to get a taste of tunes and activism from Samala and more.
